Notes From 2006

2006

September 27, 2006
It's been a long time since I had time to sit and write. I should write about knitting or spinning, but I guess that would mean I should have taken photos of the most recent spinning or knitting. Oh well.

But I do have photos of the flora and fauna...

The spider returned a few days after it left. But this time, made it's web underneath the awning.

The cardinals are still hanging around, calling for food, and making me smile.

And the burning bush is changing....

More information later, I hope....

I was at my LYS yesterday (big sale) and was a bit appalled by something I saw… There were a number of women shoppers who asked the shop employees if they were "ready" to knit a pattern that they held in their hand. The employees always said that "yes, you can do this" - it was that the shoppers needed the permission of an "expert" before they allowed themselves to try a new challenge.

I find that scary.

That people (especially women) need to have permission of others before embarking on some new project.

This made me think - am I appalled because I find it appalling? Or is it the kind of thing where I am critical of others for doing something that may be an aspect of my own self?

That's almost a bit too deep for me on a Sunday morning. I think I'd rather spin than ruminate on that thought. (or ruminate on it while I spin).

Perhaps that's why I spin. There doesn't seem to be quite as many rules. Or maybe I just don't know them, and would be a more successful spinner if I did.

I am so glad that the Master's program is completed. However, I sure miss some of those conversations I had with people about a whole slew of things. I think I need to reconnect…This "permission" thing seems that it would be a part of a good conversation with a few of the OD crowd.

It has been a amazing week for bugs around the malarkey abode. First, there was this huge one sitting on the front of the garage for days on end. When I finally got the nerve to get close enough to it (after three days), I realized it was an empty shell of something.

THEN, I awoke Wednesday morning to find a very large spider on a very large web outside my front door. It was there the next morning, evening, and this went on until last night. It only appears after dark, so photos were difficult. It really looks like an octopus - with that bulbous body. Has there been any suggestions that spiders have evolved from octupi? I wonder... My SH suggested that it is guarding my front door. You know, a "guardian spider". Hmmmm. It is raining this morning, and the web is no longer there. I hope it returns. As long as it stays outside and I can get in and out of my front door. I guess I'm being picky, but practical.

Last weekend, I went to the Michigan Fiber Festival. Wow, it was great. Not as frenzied as the MDSW festival. I bought a Shetland lambswool fleece for $9. I don't know enough about fleece to know if it was "good" or not, but am willing to take a chance and figure it out. The friendly duo at the Wooly Knob have it and will process it, sometime in the next six to eight weeks.

I saw a beautiful goat named "Bucky" - now, again, I don't have enough knowledge to know if, in fact, he was "beautiful". But he sure was a pleasant chap. And the curls on the top of his head were beautiful. He had soulful eyes, and I just wanted him to come home with me. Although, that would be a bit unpractical. He was past the "can provide beautiful mohair fiber" stage. But still participating in producing baby mohair goats.
